Brisbane Writers' Festival 2014

On the 4th September a group of twenty students (from Yr 4 to 7) and two teachers, Mrs Talbot and Miss Kruger, boarded the train to travel into the State Library for this year’s Writers’ Festival.

Each year, as part of the wider Brisbane festival, writers gather in the State Library precinct and give talks and meet with avid readers who are interested to learn how they write their fantastic books!

Each year students from Kuraby enjoy the experience of listening to authors, watching illustrators, being able to ask questions of their favourite writers and even obtaining an autograph. This year was no exception and our group was gripped by “BWF Fever” as they hunted down authors for autographs or bought their books at the bookshop on site.

Miss Kruger always purchases popular titles and this year a favourite with the Year 7 group was “Loyal Creatures” by Morris Gleitzmann whom we saw. The Year 4 -5s were avid fans of “The 52 storey Treehouse” by Andy Griffith. So, ten books later – most signed by the authors – we were on board the train for a super quiet ride back to Kuraby. SHHHHH…..everyone is reading!!!!

Readers Cup 2014

Kuraby’s Reader’s Cup team did extremely well to finish 5th in this year’s Metropolitan West Competition. The team of five – Olivia B., Deena A., Sara A-K., Shayma B. and Akeela C. began preparing and training for the June competition day in early April. The girls had to read and understand 5 novels and one picture book in order to answer questions about them. Congratulations to all the team members – it is good to see how the Kuraby Keys to Success (perseverance, organisation and resilience) were used to win a place in the Top Ten schools.

Back at school, we celebrated our success with a High Tea in the Library. It was yummy and very pink and a good time was had by all!
